EchoLight REMS is an advanced imaging technique that utilizes radio frequency echographic signals to assess bone density and quality. Unlike traditional methods that rely on X-ray radiation, REMS employs ultrasound waves to capture detailed images of the bone structure, providing valuable insights into bone health without exposing patients to ionizing radiation.
Peak bone density is reached in the late 20s, and may begin to decline as early as the 30s and 40s. The following factors may further weaken bones:
Perimenopause (mid-40 to mid-50 years of age)
Cancer treatments
Chronic liver, kidney and/or thyroid disease
Consuming large amounts of caffeinated or carbonated beverages
Diabetes
Dairy-free diets without calcium from other food sources
Early menopause (before the age of 45, either naturally or surgically)
Family history of osteoporosis and/or hip fracture
Heavy drinker
Low testosterone (men)
Low body weight or small stature
Malabsorption or Digestive system disorders, such as I.B.S., Colitis, Crohn’s Disease, Celiac Disease
Menopause
No periods for 6+ months
Past or present eating disorder
Pregnancy
Rheumatoid arthritis
Smoker
Sedentary lifestyle
Some medications such as proton pump inhibitors
Taking steroid medication
Thyroid issues and/or disease
Understanding the Difference between
DEXA and EchoLight REMS Scans
One of the most significant advantages of EchoLight REMS is its ability to measure bone density without using ionizing radiation. This makes it a safer option, particularly for patients who require frequent monitoring, such as those with chronic conditions or those undergoing long-term treatment for osteoporosis.
EchoLight REMS provides highly accurate and precise measurements of bone mineral density (BMD) and bone quality. It analyzes multiple parameters, including bone microarchitecture, which can offer a more comprehensive understanding of bone health compared to the single BMD value provided by DEXA.
Echolight’s ultrasound technology provides highly accurate measurements of bone density, enabling healthcare professionals to assess bone health with precision. This accuracy allows for early detection of bone loss and effective intervention strategies.
The Echolight densitometer offers rapid scanning times, minimizing patient wait times and allowing healthcare providers to accommodate more individuals, enhancing overall efficiency.
How to prepare for your appointment
What to expect at your appointment
Upon completion of your REMS scan, you will receive a comprehensive report of your bone mineral density (BMD) as well as a Fragility Score. The REMS scan also calculates the likelihood of experiencing a major osteoporotic fracture within the next 5 years. You can share this with your trusted healthcare professional who can guide you through any necessary next steps based on your results.
