Radiation-free technology for assessing bone density and quality on the lumbar vertebrae and proximal femur through a revolutionary approach to characterize bone microarchitecture using radio frequency signals acquired during a simple ultrasound scan. The method overcomes all the main limitations of DXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) and QUS (Quantitative Bone Ultrasound).
This very recent study, published on the Bone Joint Open by international key Opinion Leaders from USA and UK, showed that REMS are becoming a commonplace technology in primary and secondary healthcare environments, adding to clinicians’ ability to accurately measure bone health parameters in a timely way.
This study found REMS performs similarly to DXA for trabecular integrity (via TBS) and fracture risk stratification (via FRAX/NOGG). Notably, in cases where DXA was ‘normal’ but REMS indicated osteopenia, about half showed degraded TBS, suggesting REMS may better flag microarchitectural deficits. With portability and no radiation, the findings support REMS as a practical surrogate for DXA in osteoporosis assessment.
In a cohort of 431 patients with lumbar spine osteoarthritis, DXA often overestimated spine BMD, while REMS avoided OA artifacts. REMS classified many more patients as osteoporotic than DXA overall (39.4% vs 15.1%) and at the spine (30.5% vs 6.0%), enabling earlier and more accurate identification of bone fragility. Read the full article for methods, statistics, and clinical implications.
This review explores the growing evidence behind REMS as a radiation-free alternative to DXA for measuring bone density and predicting fracture risk. It highlights its portability, safety for underserved groups, and potential to expand access to osteoporosis assessment in a wide range of clinical settings.
NASA is now using Echolight’s REMS technology in spaceflight simulations to monitor bone health safely and reliably. The radiation-free, portable device allows frequent scans of the spine and femur, providing critical insights into bone loss and countermeasures for astronauts on long-duration missions.
EchoLight REMS technology represents a significant advancement in the field of bone health assessment. Its radiation-free, non-invasive approach, combined with high accuracy and patient convenience, positions it as a superior alternative to traditional DEXA scans.
As the medical community continues to embrace innovative solutions, EchoLight REMS stands out as a promising tool in the fight against osteoporosis and other bone-related conditions, ensuring better patient outcomes and improved quality of care.
The absence of radiation allows this method to be used on a heterogeneous variety of patients, women in the menopause transition, patients at risk of secondary osteoporosis, diabetic patients, patients who have undergone cancer treatments and pregnant women.
